POP3 vs. IMAP

The server will either allow POP or IMAP. The differences are outlined below.

POP3

  • Mail is stored on your computer
  • The mailbox cannot easily be shared between more than one computer
  • Your mailbox can be as big as you need
  • When you login to webmail, you will only see new messages

IMAP

  • Mail is always kept on the server
  • The mailbox can easily be shared between more than one computer
  • Your mailbox should be kept below a sensible size, e.g. ~150MB max
  • When you login to webmail, you will see new and old messages
  • Mail can be sorted into folders on the server (manually or automatically, based on rules)
